Well, today's run was nothing special really. I gave myself two days rest after the excruciating 12 miler on Friday. I did take a different approach on the Hilly Grail now that I think about it. Usually I just try to slowly run up the hill for as long as I can before I need to walk and then I alternate up to the top. This time, I decided to try my idea of speed work up the hill. Once I hit the discernible bottom of the hill, I maintained my pace as much as I could until I hit the stoplight. Then I took a walk break. At a point further up the hill, I picked up the run again and ran faster than I normally would up an incline (which is really more of a slow job) and decreased to a walking break. I think I walked more than I normally would but it felt like I exerted more effort.
I've been reading more and more that experienced runners incorporate speed work during their shorter weekly runs to help them increase their pace times. As I still have not figured out technical runner mumbo jumbo, I'll give my amateur speed work a shot.
All in all, I ran 4.6 miles in 47:16.
